Cricketers rally round Sean Abbott following Phil Hughes death

Cricketers rally round New South Wales all-rounder Sean Abbott, whose bouncer struck the head of Phil Hughes, who passed away today aged 25.

A number of figures in the world of cricket have given their support to New South Wales all-rounder Sean Abbott following the passing of Australia batsman Phil Hughes.

Abbott's bouncer during Tuesday's Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground struck the head of Hughes, who was transferred to St Vincent's Hospital to undergo surgery.

Hughes never regained consciousness and it was confirmed by doctors that the cricketer suffered vertebral artery dissection, one hundred cases of which have ever been reported.

Following the tragic news, sportsmen have expressed their support towards Abbott on social media.

"Stay strong @seanabbot77 ... Not your fault young man."
Former Australia batsman Dean Jones

"Spare a thought for poor Sean Abbott too. He will need all the support possible to help him try and get through this. #CricketFamily."
Former England batsman Alec Stewart

"Sean Abbott - thinking about you too, mate!"
Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen

"Saddest day in cricket fraternity. Rest in peace mate and Sean Abbott stay strong."
India batsman Rohit Sharma

Hughes played 26 Tests and 25 one-day internationals for Australia.
