Doctor Who will move to a streaming-first approach on iPlayer when it returns in May.

Doctor Who will be released globally at the same time when it returns for its new series in May, it has been announced.

The sci-fi show will premiere new episodes every Saturday morning at midnight UK time via BBC iPlayer, simultaneously becoming available on Disney+ for viewers worldwide outside of the UK.

Episodes will continue to air on Saturday evenings on BBC One, meanwhile, preserving the show's linear slot for what will be new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa and companion Millie Gibson's first full series together.

Speaking about the change, showrunner Russell T Davies said: "At last, it's my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby's adventures together.

"Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that's been spanning time and space for decades. Don't miss a second!"

The series will begin with the release of the first two episodes on Saturday, May 11 - the day of the Eurovision final - with a new episode following every week thereafter.
