Avatar: The Way of Water passes $850m at the worldwide box office and is on course to hit $1 billion by the end of the year.

Avatar: The Way of Water has now reached $855.4m (£709m) at the worldwide box office, according to the latest figures.

The James Cameron epic - released a week before Christmas - had grossed $253.7m in North America and $601.7m by the end of Christmas Day.

The figures are slightly higher than expected due to the extreme cold weather sweeping the US, which has led to many cinemas being closed over the four-day weekend.

Analysts now expect the gross to rise to $900m (£746m) by the end of Boxing Day before hitting the magic milestone of $1 billion (£828.8m) before the year is out.

The movie is thought to have cost in the region of $350m (£290.1m) to make, although with marketing, Cameron has claimed that it will need to generate $2 billion (£1.66 billion) just to break even.
