Netflix halts 'Terrace House' production in Japan

Netflix confirms that popular Japanese reality series Terrace House has temporarily paused production due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Netflix has temporarily paused filming on popular reality series Terrace House in Tokyo due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The show follows a group of strangers as they move into a house and get to know each other over the course of many months - a format akin to MTV's The Real World, one of the first of a new wave of reality shows in the 1990s.

Terrace House has become a cult sleeper hit worldwide after being released internationally on Netflix, where new episodes are released weekly.

The current season has been on air continuously since last May but will now drop off air for a period after a state of emergency was declared in the Japanese capital.

In a statement on Twitter, Netflix confirmed: "We are suspending the current production of Terrace House Tokyo 2019-2020, giving the safety and health of cast and staff top priority."

Japan has so far been one of the countries to be least hit by COVID-19, with 143 people losing their lives, although that number has risen by 27 over the last 24 hours.
