Piers Morgan reveals that he has been battling coronavirus after picking up the disease at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley earlier this month.

Former Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has revealed that he caught coronavirus at the final of Euro 2020 a fortnight ago.

The event at Wembley, where England lost to Italy on penalties, was supposed to be a reduced-capacity affair - and all attendees had to either prove that they had been double vaccinated or recently tested negative for COVID-19.

However, in shocking scenes, thousands of ticketless fans forced their way into the stadium, while the sheer number of people present meant that coronavirus status checks were not carried out effectively.

Morgan, 57, who is double-jabbed, told the Daily Mail: "My confidence that the event would be 'covid safe' had disintegrated. It was turning into an unregulated free-for-all."

Two days after the final Morgan began to feel unwell and took a PCR test, which came back positive for the disease.

"This is definitely the roughest I've felt from any illness in my adult life," he added, "but, as I slowly come out the other side, coughing and spluttering I'm still here – unlike so many millions around the world who've lost their lives to Covid in this pandemic.

"For that, I owe a heartfelt debt of thanks to the brilliant scientists up in Oxford who created the Astra-Zeneca vaccine with such astonishing speed."

Around 88% of the UK adult population have now had at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, although the number of people testing positive is at its highest level since January.

Due to the vaccine, however, the number of hospitalisations and deaths remains relatively low.
