Manchester City are reportedly planning to hijack Liverpool's move for Brighton & Hove Albion's Alexis Mac Allister as the Citizens look to strengthen in midfield.

Manchester City have reportedly entered the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool also interested in the player.

The Citizens secured their third-straight Premier League title on the weekend and lifted the famous trophy in front of their Etihad faithful after a much-changed XI defeated Chelsea courtesy of a Julian Alvarez strike.

World Cup winner Mac Allister has been enjoying his own success on the coast this season with Brighton - the 24-year-old provided the service that allowed Evan Ferguson to score the first goal during a 3-1 victory over Southampton, sealing European football for the Seagulls.

According to The Mirror, Manchester City are aiming to hijack Liverpool's attempts to sign Mac Allister this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season.

The report claims that Pep Guardiola has identified the Argentinian star as a perfect replacement for Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, with both said to be departing the treble-hunting champions at the campaign's end.

Liverpool are also looking to bolster their engine room before the start of next season, with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita leaving Merseyside for pastures new.

Mac Allister and his Brighton side need a point from their final game to mathematically secure Europa League football for next term - a trip to Villa Park awaits Roberto De Zerbi's men on Sunday afternoon.
