Bruno Fernandes reveals that he spoke to Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo before following in his footsteps by joining Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon.

Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he spoke to Portugal international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo before completing his move to Manchester United.

Fernandes's future has been the subject of intense speculation for a number of months, but one of the longest-running sagas of recent windows came to an end when United finalised the signing on Thursday.

The 25-year-old has followed the route previously taken by Ronaldo and compatriot Nani in moving to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon, but he insists that he is out to make his own history at the club.

"I talked about Manchester United with Cristiano. He just said good things about United. He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here," Fernandes told the club's official website.

"I think he is happy with my transfer and I also talked with Ole and he said he asked Cristiano about me and he said good things about me which is good. Cristiano plays with me in the national team and he knows me, and for me he's a good person. I want to follow his steps.

"Now I want to write my history, different to Cristiano because he is the best player in the world. He has played 15 years at the top and it's difficult to do this, but I want to give my best to write my name in the history of Manchester United."

Ronaldo went on to score 118 goals in 292 appearances for United following his 2003 move from Sporting, helping the club to nine trophies and winning the first of his five Ballons d'Or during his time at Old Trafford.
