Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele announces that he will retire from football at the end of his current contract with Guangzhou City.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of his contract.

The 34-year-old made a name for himself during his six-and-a-half year stint in North London, scoring 10 goals and setting up 12 more in 249 appearances for Tottenham.

Dembele currently plies his trade with Chinese Super League side Guangzhou City, and the Belgian has now confirmed that he will hang up his boots once his current deal expires.

On Tuesday, Dembele affirmed that he has not officially retired just yet, writing on Instagram: "Hi everyone, first of all I would like to thank you all for the messages I have received.

"To clear up, I haven't stopped yet. I still have a year on my contract left. But I can already share I will stop my career after this year is finished. Thank you."

Dembele has registered one goal and four assists in 47 matches for his current club in all competitions but only made eight appearances for Guangzhou City in the 2021 CSL season.

The ex-Fulham, AZ Alkmaar and Germinal Beerschot man prepares to retire with one Eredivisie title, one Dutch Super Cup and one Belgian Cup title to his name, as well as 82 caps for the Belgian national team.
