Oscar Pistorius to return to court after undergoing month of psychiatric tests

Oscar Pistorius will return to court in Pretoria today after undergoing 30-day psychiatric testing to assess his mental state when he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius will return to court in Pretoria, South Africa today after undergoing a month of psychiatric tests, which placed his murder trial on hold for six weeks.

The 27-year-old is accused of murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot dead through a bathroom door at his home during the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

Last month, the double amputee was ordered to undergo mental evaluation for 30 days as an outpatient at Weskoppies psychiatric hospital in Pretoria.

The move was granted by judge Thokozile Masipa in a bid to discover if Pistorius's anxiety disorder would have hampered his ability to decide between right and wrong when the shooting took place.

According to The Guardian, today, the judge will receive reports from a panel of one psychologist and three psychiatrists who evaluated the athlete during the 30-day period.

Spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority Nathi Mncube told the Saturday Star newspaper: "We are expecting the reports to be handed in on Monday and the case should proceed. How we will proceed will be determined by the judge and by the outcome of the reports, but Pistorius has to be at court."

Pistorius denies murder by maintaining that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired the gunshots through the locked door in his bathroom.
