James Davies still hopeful of rugby sevens medal

Wales forward James Davies insists that his side can still medal at the Commonwealth Games despite losing their final match on the opening day of sevens action.

Wales forward James Davies has insisted that his side are still capable of picking up a medal at the Commonwealth Games despite losing to Samoa in their final match of day one.

Samoa edged to a 19-12 victory at Ibrox to secure top spot in Pool C, leaving Wales with the daunting challenge of facing Australia in the medal quarter-finals tomorrow.

However, while Davies admits that it was a disappointment to lose the final game, he does not believe that the result will have too big a bearing on his side's tournament as a whole.

"It was a disappointing end to the second day, but we're still in the same position [as if we'd won]. We're still in the quarter-final tomorrow. We'd done the business early on, so we're relatively happy," he told Sports Mole.

"We're in the same position as if we would have been in winning or losing. We've got to beat the best teams to win the tournament and hopefully we can come here tomorrow and put a good performance in."

Wales were already guaranteed a place in the last eight going into their match against Samoa having beaten Papua New Guinea and Malaysia earlier in the day.
