The 19-year-old pipped Cameron van der Burgh to register a new Games best of 27.00, beating the South African's time of 27.18 from Delhi four years ago.

It comes less than 24 hours after the Derby-born swimmer set a new best time in the men's 100m breaststroke, breaking his own Commonwealth record to win gold last night.

Scotland's Ross Murdoch, meanwhile, will go head-to-head with Peaty in tonight's semi-final after beating Australian Christian Sprenger in his heat with a time of 27.44.

Rob Holderness finished third to set a new Welsh record by coming in at 27.93.
