Peruvian celebrates last place

Cross country skier Roberto Carcelen celebrates after his performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi despite finishing in last place.

Cross-country skier Roberto Carcelen celebrated representing his country after his performance in the men's cross country skiing 15km classic at the Winter Olympic Games despite finishing last in 87th place.

The Peruvian grabbed his country's flag and waved it at the crowd as he finished 10 minutes slower than any other competitor.

After the race, he revealed he had suffered an injury in training.

He told reporters: "It was a very difficult race for me.

"I was in a lot of pain on my right ribs... Hopefully I'll inspire people in Peru.

"I'm retiring now. I want to dedicate myself to a cross-country development project and to work with kids to get them to the Olympics. I think I'll be more useful doing this."

Carcelen became the first athlete from the country to compete at the Winter Olympic Games after participating in Vancouver.
