Ed Woodward is leaning towards appointing Mauricio Pochettino as Manchester United's next manager as doubts grow over Jose Mourinho's future, according to a report.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's preferred choice to replace Jose Mourinho as Manchester United boss.

Mourinho's short-term future at Old Trafford is in doubt following a poor start to his third season at the helm, seeing his side make their worst league start since 1989 and crash out of the EFL Cup in the third round to lower-league opposition.

Amid talk that the Portuguese has one game to save his job - Saturday's visit of Newcastle United - The Independent claims that Woodward already has a shortlist of options to take over.

Despite the availability of Zinedine Zidane, who has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in May, Woodward is said to be leaning towards a swoop for Tottenham's boss.

Spurs will fight off any move from United, however, having tied the 46-year-old down to a new five-year contract at the end of last season.
